Get ready for winter and another heating season!

Inspect and clean your chimney if your heating system vents into it.
You don't think about it, after all it was fine last year - but is your chimney safe?  Now is a great time to schedule a yearly inspection and cleaning of your chimney with a professional chimney sweep -  before the heating season!

Heating with Wood

With prices of heating fuel rising, many people will be using wood to heat their homes this winter.  If you’re a wood stove pro or novice, consider these tips…

  • Keep all combustibles away from a wood stove.
  • If you’re using a fireplace, always use a fireplace screen.

The fire is out, now what?

Unless the fire has been out for a long time, there are probably some live embers in the ashes that could rekindle a fire.

  • When removing ashes from a wood stove – make sure the stove is cold.  Don’t risk removing live embers from the stove.
  • Always empty ashes into a metal container that may be sealed.
  • Always store the ashes in a sealed metal container away from your home and all combustibles.  Don’t store the container on your wood deck.

What should I do if I think I have a chimney fire?

If you think you may have a chimney fire, leave your home and call 9-1-1.

Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Good idea? You bet!  Every year lives are saved by battery operated smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.  They are available at most home improvement stores and they are easy to install.  If you already have battery operated smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms – change the batteries before the heating season.  Batteries should be replaced twice a year.
